Fazz recently held the role of Chief Strategy & Ventures Officer at Tenaga Nasional Berhad (“TNB”) from 2021 to 2022. His main achievement over the two year period was the development and the announcement of TNB’s Sustainability Pathway 2050. This involved the reduction of TNB’s coal generation capacity by 50% in 2035 (with a 35% reduction in emissions intensity), and to be coal free and achieve a net zero aspiration by 2050. Aside from the coal generation reduction the Sustainability Pathway also includes detailed roadmap for TNB’s businesses across the whole value chain including identification of Energy Transition technology focus areas to achieve the Net Zero aspiration. This makes TNB amongst the leading companies with strong sustainability strategies.
Prior to this, as the Chief Strategy & Regulatory Officer from 2018 to 2020, Fazz’s main focus was on TNB’s regulatory matters in particular the reform of the power sector mooted by the then Government under the Malaysian Electricity Supply Industry (“MESI”) 2.0 initiative. The critical achievements during this time was the first time recovery of RM2.1 billion fuel cost (“ICPT”) surcharge over the 2018 to 2019 period, as well as the development and consensus obtained with the then Government of the MESI 2.0 roadmap in 2019. During this time, Fazz also led the re-structuring of the TNB Group with the separation and formation of TNB’s generation business as a wholly owned subsidiary worth RM11 billion.
Fazz started his tenure at TNB as the Chief Financial Officer (“CFO”) for 6 years since July 2012. During this time Fazz in 2016 completed the RM761 million acquisition of Integrax Berhad, a vital vertical integration of the port and commodity handling operations for TNB’s Manjung Power Plants. In addition to this, he developed and implemented new capital management strategies for TNB including the implementation of new dividend policy in 2017 which increased TNB’s dividend payout from RM1.8 billion in FY2016 to RM3.4 billion in FY2017. During his tenure as TNB CFO, he led the financial analysis of the Reimagining TNB strategy as well as led the investor engagement on the newly implemented Incentive Based Regulations for the power sector. This saw TNB’s earnings rise from RM4.4 billion in FY2012 and hitting the highest PATAMI of RM7.4 billion in FY2016. TNB’s share price nearly tripled from RM6.84 per share in August 2012 to RM16.24 in March 2018.
Prior to joining TNB in July 2012, Fazz was with the Naza Group of Companies for two years as the CFO of the group of companies under Joint Executive Chairman SM Nasarudin SM Nasimuddin. He also served Telekom Malaysia Berhad (“TM”) in several capacities from 2005 to 2010, including tenures as the CFO of TM’s Malaysia Business and TMNet Sdn Bhd.
He is a fellow of the ACCA and an MIA member, and served for 10 years since 1995 with Shell Malaysia in various financial management and corporate roles. Prior to that, he served for 4 years in public accounting practices including almost 3 years in Price Waterhouse, Kuala Lumpur as a tax consultant.
Fazz is a strong believer of opportunities and future possibilities. He is passionate about people being the key catalysts to unleashing an organisations’ full potential. Empowering multi-skilled employees will encourage strong leadership and builds capabilities – and ultimately puts entrepreneurship mindsets in large enterprises.
