Mind-Shattering Novels of Philip K. Dick

source site – Science Fiction and Fantasy Reading Experience: Mind-Shattering Novels of Philip K. Dick

As we look forward to another new year, it is a good time to reflect on some of the many people who wrote about the future. Philip K. Dick was one of them:

Philip K. Dick was abducted by… his own mind, and wrote about it for as long as SF industry would publish it. Which is extremely lucky for millions of his fans, me included.

Unless you are a particle physicist (for whom nothing is as it seems anyway), you’re not likely to meet as many convoluted and unpredictable ideas and storylines as in Philip K. Dick’s science fiction (the requirement, of course, is that it all still has to make coherent sense, otherwise we could just switch on Douglas Adams’ Improbability Drive and publish the outcome).

PKD was a one-man factory of apocalyptic “What-ifs?”, staggering in their scope and suggested outcomes. His stories are often dark in tone, but intensely satisfying: crammed with concepts and ideas, tightly written and pretty much unforgettable.

i have not read many of philip k dick‘s novels. but i have seen a number of the titles made into films. in general, i find his ideas on science fiction and mind bending tales are very interesting and thought provoking. some of the interesting concepts introduced by PKD are the concepts of cyborg sentience in Bladerunner (Do androids dream of electric sheep?); the memory implants in Total Recall (We Can Remember It for You Wholesale); foresights in The Minority Report (The Minority Report); and a few others based on some of his short stories.

so what are your best PKD stories?

Scientists plan to ignite tiny man-made star

source site – Scientists plan to ignite tiny man-made star – Telegraph

While it has seemed an impossible goal for nearly 100 years, scientists now believe that they are on brink of cracking one of the biggest problems in physics by harnessing the power of nuclear fusion, the reaction that burns at the heart of the sun.

In the spring, a team will begin attempts to ignite a tiny man-made star inside a laboratory and trigger a thermonuclear reaction.

Its goal is to generate temperatures of more than 100 million degrees Celsius and pressures billions of times higher than those found anywhere else on earth, from a speck of fuel little bigger than a pinhead. If successful, the experiment will mark the first step towards building a practical nuclear fusion power station and a source of almost limitless energy.

this seems like an exciting development. but how much will it cost and what are the safety implications? will it be practical?

What Is Google App Engine?

source site – What Is Google App Engine? – Google App Engine – Google Code

Google App Engine lets you run your web applications on Google’s infrastructure. App Engine applications are easy to build, easy to maintain, and easy to scale as your traffic and data storage needs grow. With App Engine, there are no servers to maintain: You just upload your application, and it’s ready to serve your users.

You can serve your app using a free domain name on the appspot.com domain, or use Google Apps to serve it from your own domain. You can share your application with the world, or limit access to members of your organization.

App Engine costs nothing to get started. Sign up for a free account, and you can develop and publish your application for the world to see, at no charge and with no obligation. A free account can use up to 500MB of persistent storage and enough CPU and bandwidth for about 5 million page views a month.

During the preview release of Google App Engine, only free accounts are available. In the near future, you will be able to purchase additional computing resources.

is the google app engine just another web host using python environment?

from what i read – it sounds like that. unfortunately, it seems a bit more technical than my own ability can comprehend. would like to know more from those who have actually used google app engine…

These incredible photographs look more like a scene from the end of the world than a winter sunrise.

The dramatic pictures were taken in north west Greenland by British Arctic photographers Bryan and Cherry Alexander and show a storm brewing over an Inuit community.

these pictures are must see in their awesomeness. the rolling clouds look almost like thick blankets covering the world… like a portent for doom.

“The walls between art and engineering only exists in our mind”… Kinetic sculptor Theo Jensen

we often thinking of engineering as structured and logical… but i always feel that art plays a great part in this. i use to do math based on looking at problems from different perspectives. this would not be possible without a creative and unconventional mind.

however, to gain this sort of abilities we need to have an open and creative environment. we need to allow experimentation and failures and the notion that there is no right or wrong answer to problems.
