My projects: problems with multi drupal sites install

I post this on the drupal website at http://drupal.org/node/91684

I have posted a couple of requests for support on the following threads:

http://drupal.org/node/62255
http://drupal.org/node/62255#comment-126256

http://drupal.org/node/64591#comment-122097

…but can’t seem to get any answers. perhaps my requests are buried deep in the thread. so i decide to create a new thread to seek help.

what i am trying to achieve

i would like to setup more than one drupal site using a single code base. each site would have different settings / databases. i do not want to have subdomains (although this could be a later requirement) or parked domains (as suggested by fidelis on http://drupal.org/node/62255#comment-126409). my response: i intend to set up various community interest sites with a single domain as being the traffic aggregator, so the additional domains is not an option.

the problem

my main site, http://www.tivix.net/ points to “/public_html”, which in my understanding is the drupal root. all my drupal files and subdirectories are installed in “/public_html”, so the sites directories are located: “/public_hmtl/sites” and the corresponding url for the second site is intended to be http://www.tivix.net/newsite

I have setup the configuration on sites/www.tivix.net.newsite/settings.php accordingly with the necessary mysql database access variables (different from the mainsite database) and the base url being http://www.tivix.net/newsite

when i point the browser url to http://www.tivix.net/newsite it does not reach the newsite controls & database, but instead reaches the mainsite controls with a “page not found” error.

i considered the standard multisite install with a couple of options:

option a.
maincode installed in /firstsite/ subdirectory from the root (url1 = www.tivix.net/firstsite). i would like to access another site via url2 = www.tivix.net/newsite. so i created the subdirectory under /firstsite/sites/www.tivix.net.newsite/ but i cannot seem to access it via the url2 above.
option b.
maincode installed in / root directory (ie public_html) (url1 = www.tivix.net). i would like to access another site via url2 = www.tivix.net/newsite. so i created the subdirectory under /sites/www.tivix.net.newsite/ . Still, i cannot seem to access it via the url2 above.

using option b above… i tried symlink as follows:

ln -s root root/newsite

and…

ln -s root/ root/newsite/

and…

ln -s /public_html /public_html/newsite

and…

ln -s /public_html/ /public_html/newsite/

neither works.

anything else needs changing? .htaccess perhaps? if so, what do i look for and change?

what i am using

  • cpanel based shared webhost
  • php 5.1.5
  • mySQL 4.1.21-standard
  • phpmyadmin
  • drupal 4.7
  • putty SSH
  • url friendly links

no shell access.

my skill level

beginner. i know very little of unix / linux commands. very little of htaccess. i’ve read the handbook and the install instructions over and over again and i am very confused. i still do not know how to set it up properly.

I appreciate any help i can get here.

cheers

The F1 career of the most successful formula one driver of all time is about to come to a close this sunday. Much as i hate the guy’s guts, i must say that Michael Schumacher has been the closest you will ever get to a perfect formula one driver. Fast, fit, aggressive, technical, analytical, smart, strong teamplayer, good pr – everything a modern day f1 driver should be. And this shows in the monumental statistics accumulated by the man. He has just about broken every f1 numbers record apart from the most race starts (IIRC, just 6 shy of Ricardo Patrese’s 256 starts).

The numbers (wins, wdcs, poles) starts to become meaningless now, but what is important is that Schumi dominated his era more than anybody has ever done before. He has worked to build a strong team that supports him since day one. It is also noteworthy that Schumi’s team of Ross Brawn, Rory Byrne and other technical people have been with him almost throughout his f1 career. This kind of stability is also unprecedented in many sports.

Schumi’s debut race at Spa in 1991 – more than 15 years ago – marked the coming of a legend. Shame that f1 was deprived of the spectacle of battles between Senna and Schumi in the mid 90s. That would have been legendary as well.

Still after 15 years at the top, Schumi is still there at the top. But this time round, it is Fernando Alonso who is his challenger. Alonso has proven to be a worthy successor. A worthy holder of the F1 crown. Like Schumi, Alonso’s ability to pull something out of the bag when on paper he shouldn’t – gives him a certain aura of success that Schumi had long held before.

F1 today has grown tremendously partly due to Schumi’s exploits – he polarises opinions of f1 followers who either want to see how many more records he will break, or who will finally humble the great man.

For me, all i can say is Danke Michael for the privilege of witnessing something very special in f1.

As a parting surprise, Shell released a couple of videos of Schumacher….

Schumi – is he real?

Spider-man 3

Whilst I am at the movies…. here’s a short teaser from Spider-man 3.

The first two films were both excellent (the second slightly better)… and I expect the third to be equally as good. The appearance of the black alien / venom makes it exciting.

Frank Miller’s 300

Anybody who reads batman and daredevil graphic novels will know the name Frank Miller. It has been a while however since Miller penned anything related to either of the DC or Marvel superhero stories.

He has produced some landmark graphic novels such as –

These were all fantastic stories and gained a lot of critical acclaim and together with the likes of Alan Moore’s The Watchmen, raised the level of comics / graphic novels in popular culture. I would strongly suggest getting your hands on these books. Daredevil has always been my personal favourite.

Miller subsequently penned and wrote a number of other once off hero books as well as other stories including “300“. 300 is now being made into a film which is due for opening in the US on 9 March 2007. The trailer can be found at Apple’s website. It looks interesting.

From Wikipedia:

300 is a graphic novel, written and illustrated by Frank Miller with painted colors by Lynn Varley. It depicts the Battle of Thermopylae and the events leading up to it from the perspective of Leonidas, king of Sparta. The comic was particularly inspired by the 1962 film, The 300 Spartans, a movie that Miller watched as a young boy.

Every page of the comic was illustrated as a double-page spread. When the series was gathered into hardcover form, the individual pages were twice as wide as a normal comic. Miller’s art style for this project was similar to his Sin City work, although the addition of color is an obvious difference.

300 was initially published as a monthly five issue comic book series by Dark Horse Comics, the first issue published in May 1998. the issues were titled Honor, Duty, Glory, Combat and Victory. The work was collected as a hardcover graphic novel in 1999.

Congrats to A1 Team Malaysia & Alex Yoong!

Congratulations to Alex Yoong and A1 Team Malaysia for winning the second round of the 06/07 A1GP season at Brno today.

It was a strong day for Team Malaysia as Alex had driven consistently in the top 3 during qualifying and rounded that up with a stong start to finish victory in the sprint race. He followed this up with another victory in the feature race!

This is the second & third victory achieved by Alex Yoong and Team Malaysia in the new international racing series. Well done.

Now, can we have that live free to air tv coverage?
