my-KART updates: these guys are getting fast!

Jules at IC3 2005

To round off 2005 for my-KART we kicked off with an Inter Company / Car Club (“IC3”) Challenge. We even had a newspaper coverage in The Star recently. The participation was very encouraging and I have had a few enquiries from companies and car clubs about wanting to participate in 2006. The Star article did help a lot – I received several phone calls that day. Problem is I may need to think of how to manage an entry list of more than 12 teams….

Anyway, I am pleased that the 2005 my-KART activities has been very good. The last round of the race was a key & successful one for me. We also opened the 2006 KART series last Sunday the 8th of January 2006. The rain forced us to postpone the race by one from the scheduled 7th January date. Still the participation was very competitive and encouraging despite the initial wet weather. My co-founder Azlan found it enjoyable too.

Since the various articles and increased word of mouth, many Klang Valley (and some from outside the Klang Valley, as far as Melaka) are joining my-KART events. Some of these guys are very quick drivers. One thing’s for certain – there are many keen racing enthusiasts around.

Taking a break at Cyberview lodge

Holiday for the Fazz family is a pretty modest affair. Given the five kids we have, a holiday would usually mean a local destination. Since last year our family holidays is a trip to Putrajaya / Cyberjaya for a weekend away from town.

This time round our stay is at the Cyberview Lodge, in Cyberjaya. Booked two joined rooms for the family and basically left the cares all behind. The kids were pretty happy except for our youngest who still insists that we should have gone to a hotel… her definition of a hotel is a skyscraper, and the Cyberview Lodge most certainly isn’t. The kids get to enjoy the swimming pool morning and evening – which is good enough for them.

The place is pretty quiet and peaceful as the room / resident density is fairly low. The rooms are pleasant and of a nice size – big enough to fit a large family such as ours. Cyberjaya itself is not a happening place so night time activities are non-existant which suits us fine.

But I’ve had a surreal experience – perhaps the first time in my life. Last night, I dreamt having a chat with Siti Nurhaliza. This time, unlike many dreams before – I remembered quite a bit from my dream. And strangely enough, today my kids had a chance to meet non other than the star herself by the poolside. Later, I found that she was staying in the room directly above our chalet. Weird. I wonder if I’d have a chance to find out how I managed to have a major coincidence.

Let’s see…

Seasons greetings!

Seasons Greetings

Another 3 days to Christmas and another 10 days to the New Year. I would like to take this opportunity to wish all my friends a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. We are now approaching the final corner of the year and down to the start/finish straight.

I hope that for many of you 2005 was a great year. It certainly is for me, and many of the ingredients in 2005 would form a nice foundation for 2006: so I am looking forward to better things come end year and the new year 2006. And yeah, 2006 will be World Cup year – so more sleepless nights. As ever, I will be cheering out for Brazil. They are looking strong for retaining the cup. And for the second year running, Brazilian Ronaldinho was recently named FIFA World Player of the Year.

Anyway, back to the seasons’ greetings. Received a card from a celebrity friend today, but I am embarrassed that I do not have her address to reply. Anyway, did a bit of googling to look for any info that could give me her address, but instead found some amusing sites. I thought I should share these sites (not related to my friend, but has her name mentioned somewhere in them) anyway:

  • The four word film review – an interesting concept in having users just give four words as a review of a film. I like films, and often read reviews… this one should save me time in deciding whether to watch a film or not. But I think the novelty will soon wear off.
  • Melayu.com – this site contains a fairly active forum – mainly in Bahasa Malaysia… and mainly topics of Malay interest. Will probably visit in the future to get a feel of the young Malay mind.
  • yikes! chuminskaya.blog – erm… a blog by a Malay dude, I think. The guy seems to travel a bit. Nice places.

Okay – see you later.

Website experimentation

You may be wondering what is all the odd and disjointed components on this website are all about. Certainly it is not intentional the way it currently looks right now. I am experimenting with some techniques on improving the navigation on this website.

One of the techniques is javascript + CSS pulldown menus that you see on the left hand side NavMenu bar. I am taking a few tips from suckerfish and a from css.maxdesign. I’m also visiting the CSS creator forums for discussions and tips. I would like to create a menu which opens up as you hover over selected items. I hope this will improve the usability of the site.

For now, the CSS is all screwed up. So bear with me. I would also suggest that you use Firefox for the best & standards compliant experience.

my-KART championship – what a tough year!

Fazz wins the 2005 K2 Championship

Saturday 10th December 2005 was a culmination of a tough year in the my-kart K2 championship. The competition is truly getting tougher and tougher each year. But one solitary win and 5 podium finishes was enough for me to retain the K2 championship for the second year and maintain my 3rd my-kart overall championship.

To top this off, my team -Tail Happy Racing- also won the 2005 my-kart Mega Enduro Series.

2005 was also a very busy year in addition to racing. my-kart held three Foundation Conferences to start working on plans for my-kart to build the foundation for stimulating growth in the Malaysian motorsport industry (foundations #1, #2 & #3). Various initiatives were launched and alliances were made with established figures in the local motorsport industry.

Tail Happy Racing wins the 2005 my-kart Mega Enduro Series

In addition to this, my-kart held its first annual function on Saturday the 10th Dec which was attended by over 60 drivers and their better halves. The event was also graced by Aminuddin Omar -President of the Porsche Club of Malaysia, and also the 2005 Malaysian Super Series Champion. Present too were members of the local car magazines such as Faizal of Torque, Al Bakri and Yogen of Carma.

I am very happy the way 2005 turned out for my-kart. To this end, I’d like to thank my co-founder Azlan, members of the club protem committee, Naza & Wei Li for setting up the organisation structures, all the volunteers who had helped out during the year full of events and of course all the members and participants in our races.

2006 will be a more eventful year for my-kart with 10 more K2 and K3 races, 6 mega enduros and a few more Foundation Conferences. The full calendar can be found here.

Come join me in this journey towards building racing talent for the country by laying down the foundations for popularising grassroots motorsport in Malaysia.

Forza my-KART!
